Background Information

Mr. Charles Gichuhi, Head of Department - ICT and Open Learning

In 2001 KTTC in collaboration with the Flemish Association for Development Corporation and Technical Assistance (VVOB) started a higher diploma course in technical teacher education. This course mainly aimed at equipping technical teachers with managerial skills so that they could serve effectively in various administrative capacities in educational institutions. Initially the course was offered under education department but later in 2004, the ICT Integration and Open Learning Department was established and the HDDTE course moved there.

In 2004, another course, Higher Diploma in Educational Management (HDEM) was started. This course targets all diploma teachers who wish to be trained in educational management. The course is offered through mixed mode of delivery (i.e. face-to-face and distance learning). Currently, the department has 52 students enrolled in the HDEM programme.

For effective delivery of the Higher Diploma program, a modern and dynamic approach to teaching and learning was adopted. This involved the integration of ICT in the teaching and learning process. To facilitate the use of the new approach, a learning resource Centre (LRC) was established in 2002. The LRC consists of a documentation centre, a cyber and three computer laboratories.

The department also maintains the Local Area Network (LAN). It also supports other departments in the College in their communication and ICT integration needs. ICT equipment such as laptops, LCD projectors and digital cameras can be borrowed from the department for use in class by the lecturers.

Vision:

"To be a centre of excellence in the provision of ICT skills and services to the whole College fraternity"

Mission:

  • To develop ICT instructional materials.
